On the 8th of April 1923, six weeks before the end of the Irish Civil War, local Cumann na mBán member Maggie Dunne was fatally wounded after an incident involving the free state army and local Irregular IRA members at Droumlave, Adrigole. Maggie was only 26 years old at the time.
Her funeral drew a large crowd, and her coffin was draped in the tri colour flag.
On Easter Sunday a large crowd attended a mass held in her honour at St. Fachtna’s Church, Adrigole.
Following mass Celebrated by Fr. Martin Sheehan prayers were said at Maggies grave before piper Denis O Leary & flag bearers Siún Carey , Sadhbh Sullivan lead the congregation to the site where Maggie was fatally wounded.
Karen Minahane, read a poem & Fachtna O Donavan, gave a comprehensive background to Maggie's life and death.
Fergus Carey welcomed everyone & thanked those who attended.
A plaque was unveiled in her honour by her two nieces Maureen McCarthy and Sheila O Sullivan. Many of Maggie’s relations attended the commemoration.
The site where Maggie died is only a five-minute walk from her resting place at Droumlave cemetery and a short distant from her home. Overlooking Adrigole Harbour.
